THE EVOLUTION OF CINEMA
1. The Beginnings — Before Cinema
Cinema
did not appear overnight. It grew out of three earlier developments: the
invention of the camera, the rise of photography as a modern art form, and a
growing fascination with moving images. Throughout the early 1800s, inventors
kept experimenting with devices that could trick the eye into seeing pictures
move. All these devices worked on one simple idea — persistence of vision — the
eye briefly holds on to an image even after it disappears, so a fast series of
still pictures looks like continuous motion.
A
string of clever toys and gadgets carried this idea forward: Herschel's
thaumatrope, Stampfer's phenakistoscope, Horner's zoetrope, and Reynaud's
praxinoscope. The real turning point came with Eadweard Muybridge, who lined up
24 cameras to capture a galloping horse and proved that photography could
record real motion. Around the same time, Etienne-Jules Marey photographed a
bird in flight, pushing the idea further. By the end of the century, celluloid
roll film and the kinetograph (the first movie camera) were ready — and cinema
as an industry could finally begin.

2. The Silent Era (1895–1929)
Early
film technology could not sync sound with picture, so films were shot in black
and white with no spoken dialogue — hence the name "silent era". It
began in 1895 when the Lumière brothers unveiled the Cinématographe. Soon
after, Georges Méliès showed what fiction could do on screen: his 1902 film Le
Voyage dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon), based on Jules Verne's novel,
launched the trend of narrative fiction films and introduced techniques still
used today.
In
the US, Edwin S. Porter pushed the craft forward with The Great Train Robbery
(1903), regarded as the first film to achieve real continuity of action. D. W.
Griffith went further still, refining editing and camera placement to pull
audiences emotionally into a story — his The Birth of a Nation (1915) and
Intolerance (1916) raised cinema to the level of a serious art form (Birth of a
Nation is also widely criticised today for its racist content — worth a mention
in class discussion). In the Soviet Union, Sergei Eisenstein, a student of Lev
Kuleshov, developed montage editing to a fine art, best seen in Battleship
Potemkin (1925). The era is equally remembered for slapstick comedy — Charlie
Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Harold Lloyd being its biggest stars. The silent
era ended around 1929, once The Jazz Singer (1927) proved that talking pictures
were the future.

The
1920s brought sound into filmmaking through two competing systems: Warner
Bros.' Vitaphone and Fox Film's Movietone. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the
pioneering film that showed synchronised sound was possible, though Lights of
New York (1928) is credited as the first feature-length film with fully
synchronised dialogue. By 1929, The Broadway Melody became the first talking
picture to win the Academy Award for Best Picture — a clear sign that talkies
had arrived for good. Sound-on-film technology (rather than the older
sound-on-disc method) became the industry standard, and silent films quickly
faded away.

Colour
developed gradually, through several competing methods. Georges Méliès' studio
used hand colouring, painting each frame individually — a slow, tedious job
usually given to women workers, and impossible to sustain once films grew
longer. Pathé Frères then introduced mechanised stencilling and, later, tinting
(colouring the light areas using dye or a coloured film base) and toning
(chemically treating the dark areas).
A
genuine technical leap came in 1908, when George Albert Smith and Charles Urban
invented Kinemacolor, based on an additive process using alternating red and
green filters. This was soon overtaken by Herbert Kalmus's Technicolor, which
used a subtractive process: two colour-filtered prints were
"cemented" together for use in the projector, as seen in Toll of the
Sea (1922) and The Black Pirate (1926). Technicolor later developed a
Three-colour system, used in classic Hollywood films such as Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs (1937), The Wizard of Oz (1939), and Gone with the Wind (1939).
Because Technicolor needed expensive equipment and specially trained staff,
Kodak's cheaper Eastmancolor process (1952) eventually broke its monopoly. From
the 1990s, digital cameras took over, and colour grading became a
software-driven process.

The
1990s ushered in the digital era, marked above all by computer-generated
imagery (CGI), which let filmmakers build entire imaginary worlds that would
have been impossible to film physically. Green screen studios and chroma keying
gave directors even more creative freedom. Digital cameras from companies like
ARRI, Sony, Red, and Blackmagic Design freed filmmakers from the limits of
film-roll cameras, cutting costs and improving quality at the same time.
Editing changed just as dramatically: software such as Avid Media Composer,
Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and Apple Final Cut Pro replaced what used
to be slow, manual cutting and splicing of film reels.

The
most recent shift is in how films reach the audience, not just how they are
made. Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms — Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+
Hotstar, Apple TV, Spotify, and YouTube — bypassed cinema halls and traditional
broadcasters altogether, letting viewers watch on-demand on any device. This
broke the old monopoly held by big studios and gave independent filmmakers
direct access to a global audience, helped along by better home viewing setups
and widespread internet access. OTT's convenience, flexible pricing, and
anytime-anywhere access explain its popularity, but it has also drawn criticism
— over content regulation, subscription costs, excessive screen time, and the
slow decline of the shared, social experience of going to the cinema.
